Sandy White Hawk Nomination Page

My name is Sandy White Hawk. I am a Sicangu Lakota adoptee from the Rosebud Reservation, South Dakota. My project is a book entitled, “Generation After Generation We Are Coming Home.” More than a reunion story it chronicles the development of a movement of Truth Healing Reconciliation in Indian Child Welfare.

Book Excerpts:

When I was a teenager I remember walking down the street of my hometown. A car would drive by and I would hear the Hollywood War Whoop, or “hey, squaw” ….or “how about some fire water squaw?” It stung. I didn’t tell anyone. The only time I told my adoptive mom, she said, “I don’t know why they would do that. You don’t look Indian. You don’t even have black hair.” I don’t look Indian? How could she say that? I didn’t look white. What did I look like? I knew. I looked ugly and that was all I needed to know. I was a misfit who had to learn to make due. Survive.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An elder told me, “You adoptees are the last remnant of the Indian wars.”
The 1800’s marked the beginning of the Boarding School Era. Those who survived that era gave birth to us, The Adoption Era. Children being systematically removed is another kind of war; a war of policy. Now we are coming home; repatriating, returning to our homelands, reclaiming our citizenship.
I will use the $2,000 to cover the costs of publication. The book will be completed December 31st.
    All powers of prayer with you. Its about time such stories are shared and bring our children home and for them to know where they come from to know where their headed. It got to be powerful to share this and more. I wish I could vote many times. I’ll past this on to others. Many Many successes. JToledo
