I am starting a new program at the Korean Heritage House called: Asian Adoptee Youth Club (AAYC). One Saturday each month, teen Adoptees and their friends are invited to the KHH to meet with adult Asian Adoptees and Korean & Chinese American role models.
October 8th November 5th December 10th 1:30 pm – 7:00 pm
1:30 pm Teens & mentors discuss current events, adoption topics and Asian American issues. Teens get to hangout with mentors and play fun games/sports, cook, watch movies or dramas.
4:00 pm At 4:00 pm, the teens become the mentors and lead songs and games for the Chingu Play Club (a Korean culture based toddler and parent play group for Adoptee & Asian American families).
5:00 pm Mentors & teens cook Korean dinner together.
$2000 would boost this program to a much higher level then its current state. The money would help pay for advertisement, facility costs, art material, etc. I would be able to hire guest speakers and artists from the Asian Adoptee community or the larger Asian community to work with the AAYC. I also would like to purchase educational documenters such as “Who killed Vincent Chin” and current popular Korean & Chinese films.
In my opinion, the Chinese adoptee teen community is in great need of strong Asian adult role models. I believe that the AK community should feel proud to be the community these young Adoptees can look to.
